In September, Allen called with an invitation for Danae and me to meet him and Marlon at basketball camp in New Jersey, not too far from Atlantic City. I couldn’t wait to see him again—I was like a fiend needing another hit of Bubba Chuck! Nas was coming home from tour and things between us were tense, thanks to Wendy Williams, a DJ on Hot 97 radio. Wendy Williams had announced on the air that Allen and a certain Queensbridge rapper’s wife were shacking up while the rapper was hard at work on the road promoting his new album. Nas’s colleague Foxy Brown had played the grim reaper of gossip, calling Nas immediately after she heard the radio report, even adding she’d seen a photo of Destiny and Allen together at a mall in Philly. She was attempting to give Nas information and play him at the same time.
Nas was furious when he called me. For the first time—it wouldn’t be the last—I was forced to resort to the two-part method employed by cheating men everywhere: “Deny, deny, deny.”
“Nas, Foxy is just a jealous bitch. Why are you listening to rumors anyway? Why are you questioning me unless you are out there doing something that you shouldn’t be doing! Don’t ask me questions out of your own sense of guilt.”
He proceeded to curse me out as if I were a complete stranger, calling me a whore, slut, liar and so on.
“First of all you’re never home and you never take us anywhere,” I said. ‘You’re always in the streets hanging out with your stupid-ass friends. Maybe if you spent some quality time with your family, there would be no room for suspicion on my part or yours! We’re not married, I don’t see no ring on this finger. According to your father, we’re not obligated.” I knew Nas was out there, I’ve always known he was a cheater, so I had to let him fucking have it! I felt like, “What-eva, nigga. You do you and I’ll do me.”
There was no question after that blow up I was going to Atlantic City. But I was cutting it pretty close. Nas was due home Sunday night. If I left Thursday night, I’d have to be back early Sunday to beat him home. If not, I’d be back in the frying pan. The only other thing on my agenda besides Allen was giving this bitch Foxy a call. Oh, I would be calling her for sure!
